Road trip in Spain (Asturias/Galicia) in late January

We are dropping off our son in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain for a semester abroad. After a few days there, we want to road trip around Asturias and Galicia and possibly down to Lisbon (14 days total). Looking for thoughts on how open hotels/restaurants/attractions are during that time. Picos de Europa National Park is a bucket list side trip, but maybe not in winter. Also, do you think the itinerary should be more southern and big city (Santiago de Compostela/Lisbon/Porto) due to winter. Might come back in the spring/early summer for the end of the semester. Thoughts?

I’d put off the northern road trip until early summer, and for this trip either concentrate on big cities only, or head south. It’s tough to get great weather at any time of year, but being averse to cold wet weather, I’d save it for when there will be better chances.

If you have any interest in Formula 1, Fernando Alonso comes from Oviedo and has a museum there, with every F1 car he has ever driven.

You can also get snow in the mountains in November, so another vote for cities/south.

A quick check for Oviedo, Santiago de Compostela, and Cangas de Onis showed the low temperatures in January 2025 were mostly in the mid-40s while the highs were the mid to upper 50s.

As long as you remain flexible you should be fine. Weather in the mountains could potentially be an issue. Lodging could be an issue if you wanted to stay at family run places in small towns that mostly shut down at the end of the tourist season. There will be more lodging options in popular destinations that see tourists year round.

Santiago de Compostela is a small city and it would be a shame not to stop there. If it’s within your budget consider the Parador in Santiago. It has paid on-site parking and is located on the plaza next to the cathedral.

In Porto we stayed at NH Porto Jadrm. It has its own (paid) parking garage and was easy to reach coming into town. We walked all over the city from it. If you needed to do laundry, there’s a self service laundromat a five minutes walk from the hotel.

Hotels in the cities will be open. As will restaurants.

I've been to Santiago a few times in the past few years so let me know if you want restaurant recommendations.

The Parador there is, indeed, lovely and you can walk almost anywhere ion this small city from there. But there are quite a few hotels that are less expensive and very good.

There's also a very good parador outside the town of Cangas de Onis, at the edge of the Picos. I imagine it's lovely in winter but the not stayed there during that season. We've also stayed in the hamlet of Cofino, which is good for coastal visits as well as day trips to the Picos. The hotel there, PUEBLO ASTUR, is open in winter. It's marvelous!!

And a quick drive to some great restaurants.

There has been an explosion of good rural hotels and restaurants in inland Asturias in recent years....

Maybe you could work Leon into your plans....(??). Or even Astorga, although I've not been to that town in winter, either.

Be prepared for rain. That part of Spain is quite wet. You can see monthly average statistics in the climate-summary charts included in the Wikipedia entries for cities like Oviedo and Santiago de Compostela.
