Road trip from Cangis de Onis to Potes

We will be coming from Cangis de Onis, after visiting coastal Asturias, and heading to Potes. We had thought to drive to Sotres, then past Potes to Fuente De and back. But we are now wondering about, instead, going to Bulnes via Poncebos funicular and skip Fuente De? Or, just relaxing to enjoy the drive and time in Potes? Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

There was significant road construction between Panes and some point north of Potes, with only one lane open so traffic has to be stopped to let one side through at a time. You don’t say when you’re going but I don’t think the roads will fixed anytime soon. Are you staying in Potes? There is a way to get from Sotres to the road between Potes and Fuente De, CA-185. I wish I had done that when I was there in May going from Arenas de Cabrales to Fuente De instead of waiting in the traffic. It’s probably windy mountain roads, but it’s a beautiful area. The weather may dictate your decision because if the beautiful mountain views are covered by clouds, there isn’t much point to being up there. Unless you really like clouds.

If you were thinking about going up the Fuente De funicular, then I would pick that over Bulnes, although Bulnes is very pretty too. Just not as sweeping of a view.

I’ve not driven to the places you want to go, but after we visited Cangas de Onis and Covadonga we started to drive to Santillana Del Mar on the AS-114. It is a fairly mountainous road with plenty of twists and turns so the drive was slow. At one point we were forced to backtrack about 7 miles and detour onto another road due to an incident that blocked the road. The road to either Sotres or Bulnes, the CA-1, is even more rural so there will be even more twists and turns.

My point is to allow plenty of time to get to your destinations.

If you didn’t already know, the letters before the road number denote the province you’re in. AS=Asturias while CA=Cantabria.

Thanks very much to you both. We look forward to being in Picos de Europa in mid-September.
