We will be renting a car in San Sabastian and returning it to Madrid. We are nervous about driving in Madrid. Is it easier to drop the car off at the airport? We will be staying in Madrid for a week after we drop it off.

Airport, in town, it doesn't matter. Madrid's pretty easy for driving - - parking's the bear.
If you can get out of San Sebastian, getting into Madrid is easy.

We've returned rental cars a couple of times in Madrid. While Madrid isn't the worst place to drive the rental agencies can be difficult find--especially in traffic (depending on time of day.) We've also had difficulty finding a gas station to fill up before we returned the rental. I'd opt for the airport and then take the bus or Metro back into the city.

I would drop the city, depending on where you will stay. You will likely need to get to the terminal to get either one of these methods...
