You know how sometimes you throw something in to fill a day? And it turns out to be a completely unexpected highlight of your trip?
Five days into our trip to Madrid and Valencia, yesterday we decided to fill a day by going to Retiro Park in Madrid. And we were absolutely blown away. That is by far the most beautiful public park I've ever seen.
If you ever go there, don't just wander in and out. You have to see the whole thing, including the various gardens. Most people seem to gather around the lake, but you have to go to the other end of the park to see the various gardens.
We were floored by that place. We had the most wonderful day there.

Thank you for this. We will be in Madrid for 9 days in September and our apartment is just across from Retiro near the Paseo del Arte. We are excited to explore the park!

I highly recommend Jardines de Cecilio Rodriguez and Jardines de Herrero Palacios and La Rosaleda. In fact, take a whole day and see the whole park. We really enjoyed it.
