We're rethinking our schedule and, as it is Holy Week, considering skipping Seville this time around. I know many love Seville but it sounds like it will be difficult to maneuver that week. Would Malaga be a good homebase from which to make trips by car? Granada?
The drive from Malaga to Granada is about ninety minutes and to Ronda is about the same. I like Malaga more than most travelers seem to, including Mister Rick (2 pages on Malaga in the most current Spain guide book). Passing up Seville is something I wouldn't do, although your concerns regarding tourist salutation is noted.
Hi Roxann, I may not be the best person to give you advice because we are going to be staying in Cadiz soon for a week during their Carnival. But, we like being at the festivals and events because it’s such a great opportunity to be immersed in the culture! We will have an apartment, so we can make some of our meals there in case the restaurants are completely full.
If you stay in Malaga, you could go to Rondo, Gibraltar, Nerja & Granada for day trips. We liked Malaga’s center around the cathedral, etc. It has the Picasso museum, Alcazar, harbor for a 1-hr boat tour. We are staying there again for three nights this coming week, so feel free to send me a PM in a week if you want more ideas for Malaga.
I wouldn’t want to drive in Sevilla that week. It’s bad enough when it isn’t Holy Week. Where you plan on going for day trips might help determine where a good base would be.
As an FYI, it’s not just Sevilla that celebrates Holy Week. All towns and cities have processions to varying degrees so driving could be impacted any place you decide on. Rather than staying in the heart of Sevilla, maybe find a place on the outskirts with easy access to the sites, yet easy to go places with a car. That way you wouldn’t have to drive in the city center.
With regard to Holy Week activities, they are experiences you’d talk about for a long time.
