Reservation for entry at Prado museum?

Rick Steves Spain 2017 says to reserve an entry time for the Prado in Madrid. But I can find no place to do this on the Prado website. Is this necessary? Or is it only for special exhibits?

I bought tickets ahead of time, and we entered through the less busy Jeronimos entrance. We walked right in with no waiting. This was last September.

If you plan to also go to the Sophia Reina and Thyssen museums, you can buy the Paseo del Arte (museum pass) that gives you entry to all three. Saves a few Euros and you don't have to wait in line to buy tickets. You can buy the pass at any of the museums once you get there (suggest doing so at either Thyssen or Sophia Reina). You can buy it online if you want, but I wouldn't bother. Enjoy the Prado and be prepared, it is huge! Good cafeteria for a much-needed lunch break.

Don’t know your age but I was prepared to buy a ticket on line for Reina Sofia. Noticed that they had a free educational talk in English about the Guernica painting that afternoon. We happened to walk by and I enquired about the availability. Found out that entrance is free if you are over 65 years and can prove it (passport or drivers licence). The talk was at 5 PM and afterwards we looked at other areas. When we left at 6:45 pm there was quite a line-up for the free daily 7 - 9 pm entrance.
Our friends went to the Prado that day and got a seniors’s discount as well.

We had the passeo and except at the Reins Sophia (or maybe the Thyssen -- it was one of the three) had to stand in line anyway and exchange the voucher stubs for tickets. I was annoyed because at my age entrance would have been much cheaper at the Prado and other museum than the Passeo. I would have saved quite a bit since I had to stand in line anyway. The lines at none of these places were very long though.

Hi Lynn,

We just went this week, and encountered the same question. We bought the advance ticket, which like you mentioned, doesn’t have an assigned time entry.... when we showed up at the Prado with them, we were able to avoid the lines and go straight in through the entrance past the main line. Just find someone who works there, show them your ticket, and ask where to go. They’ll point you in the right direction.

Enjoy the museum! It’s phenomenal.

We were at the Prado today. I bought tickets ahead of time, 1 was a senior ticket. If they are general admission tickets you can print them at home. I had to verify senior status which meant I by-passed a huge line at the ticket window (stretching out to the street and almost the whole length of the building) and checked in at gate 1 at the north end. They took my senior voucher and gave me a ticket and we proceeded to the entrance. 5 minutes total. The line waiting to buy tickets was long and slow. We arrived around 11 am. FWIW.
