Reservation fee for Madrid hotel?

HI,

I just reserved 4 nights in January at the Hotel Europa in Madrid, which is Rick-recommended. Shortly after doing this on Booking.com, I received messages (via text, gmail, and booking.com) stating that I need to pay 120-some euro for, apparently, a booking fee. There is no mention of whether this would be in addition to the rate I have agreed to (assuming I do not cancel).

Has anyone else run into this? We are experienced travelers, though not in Spain. For all I know this is normal.

Thanks

I’ve stayed there a few times, staying there again later this year, and It’s normal. It’s deducted from your total bill. The amount should equate to one night’s stay. I screenshot to deposit transaction in case for some reason the hotel forgets to deduct it.

For that hotel I always book through its website. You save a little bit of money.

We just stayed there this week. Yes, when you check in they mention that the first night is already paid for and they charge you for the remaining nights. It may be a clearer process if you book straight through the hotel website as we did.

I booked (several rooms) direct and have received the same information about a deposit and have not yet received an answer about a method of making the deposit. So at least the process is normal.

Thank you everyone. What threw me is that the means for payment of the 1st night/reservation fee was via a separate link to an independent entity (neither hotel nor Booking.com), rather than some additional step on the Booking.com site itself. I am very sensitive to online (and hopefully other) scams, and this raised a red flag.

Yeah, I know I could probably spend less by booking directly, but Booking.com is soooo easy :-)

There should be a link in the email for paying. It connects to Getnet that is operated by Banco de Santander. The URL may read: sis.redsys.es

jaimeelsabio, thanks, yes; once I realized the additional email was legit, the link was obvious and paying up was easy.
