Hello,
We will be flying on Ryanair from Barcelona Spain to Malaga Spain and would like to rent a car for our five night stay in Marbella, June 25th (Cost del Sol.)We will be picking up the car at the airport and dropping it in Marbella. We are a family of five and have not rented a car in Europe before. Please advise on any travel tips relating to car rental in Spain. Very much appreciated !
The RS books have good information about road signage, international drivers permits, etc. specific to Spain.. A couple of things that struck me the first few times I rented a car in Europe - the car will be a standard shift.. There are very few automatics in Europe and the costs would be significantly more. The other thing that takes some adjustment is the round-abouts. There are many fewer traffic lights. They use round-abouts instead. They are pretty easy and the signage is usually very good, but you will likely need a 'Navigator' the first few times you go through one to ensure you exit at the right time.
Driving in Europe is pretty easy as long as you stay out of the really big cities.
We have rented automatic cars in Spain on several occasions. We drove from Madrid to Marbella...roads were fine and well marked. And then went to Malaga A/P to pick up another car (rate was better) for the week in Marbella. You have to check all sites for prices. We used Carjet (Malaga a/p) last trip but that was several years ago. We used National from Madrid and dropped off in Malaga.
I will be going in April and am looking to rent from Malaga train to drop at a/p after traveling. It takes time to find the right match.
