Rental car ticket?

Just returned from Spain 3 weeks ago and today received a rental car charge for a violation submitted by the traffic department while driving somewhere in the country. Any ideas for what may have occurred since I was never ticketed and was extremely careful not to speed?

You have been nailed by a traffic camera. They send the ticket to rental company (registered owner) and the rental car company charges a fee to forward your information to the local authorities. After that it is up to the local authority, they may chose to pursue a ticket or not. Very common in Italy and Italy comes after you. Have no idea what happens in Spain. And there are half dozen other things you could have done other than speeding. Driving in restricted zones is a big item. Lot of times there are speed camera right when the speed zone changes. Not much you can do until you get the official notice from Spain.

Possibly speeding, you could have been caught on a traffic camera. Jumping a red light (camera), or entering a pedestrian only or residents-only zone (also on camera).
They look up the car number plate, and ask the rental company who was driving. Is this a charge on your credit card? What this could be is the charge for providing the police with your details. Expect the actual fine to follow, with details of what and where. The police don't know your credit card and can't charge it directly.
