Renfe Rail Pass, AVE Reservations, Advance Ticket Discounts, Timetable Updates

We are a family of three adults (I'm the Aunt!) and two children (13yrs and 11yrs) flying to Madrid from Atlanta on Friday 25 May. We plan to travel by train that same Friday from Madrid to Barcelona (5 nights), train from Barcelona to Seville (3 nights), bus from Seville to Granada (3 nights) and bus from Granada to Madrid (4 nights). I have checked the Renfe, loco2, GoEuro, ALSA, tripadvisor and seat61.com websites and have tentatively selected our train/times and bus/times, if available.

  1. Our Delta plane lands at 8:30 am, we have no checked baggage and plan to take the Expres Aeropuerto bus from Terminal 1 to Atocha train station for the 12:30 AVE train (Preferente class) to Barcelona. We have never been to this airport or train station before and will be using the ATM, etc, and can use the first class lounge if we are not running late. ***Is 4 hours sufficient time from our plane landing to get on our departing train? the train before departs 11:30, but in case our incoming plane is late, I am worried we would not make that connection.

  2. The current schedules have a Preferente promo+/first class semi-flexible ticket for our Madrid/Barcelona journey, but ONLY a Preferente/first class flexible (full fare) ticket for our Barcelona/Seville Wednesday 30 May (direct 5h32minutes - we do not want to fly because we seldom travel by train and want to relax in comfort with amenities). This combo totals over 1500euros for the 5 of us. If we took the Preferente promo+ to Barcelona, and a TURISTA+ flexible to Seville, the total would be about 230 euros less. ***Is Turista+ really as comfortable as Preferente for such a long trip? does the Preferente service only provide drinks with the meal or at any times during the trip? :)

  3. A Renfe Spain Rail Pass (4 journeys), first class, totals 1200 - 1400 euros for the five of us, depending on if we buy the passes direct or through an agent. This would be a cost savings, especially if we were to book all Preferente full fare flexible tickets, and if were not able to individually book the direct Barcelona/Seville ticket (as the non-direct Preferente ticket is even more expensive!).
-Does each rail pass have to be purchased separately when using the Renfe website?
-Does each of the 5 tickets, each corresponding to a rail pass, need to be booked separately? If booked separately, how do we ensure that we are seated together (especially the children!).
-Do all journeys on each pass need to be booked at that same time, or, can the first journey be booked online, and then the next journey online at a different time?
-If we can not get seats together when booking online, can we get seats together, in person, at the train station the same day - or would this be risky trying to get 5 preferente tickets on our preferred 12:30 Madrid/Barcelona train only a couple hours before it departs? (I have a MacBook Pro with chrome and safari browsers, which I read are not necessarily compatible with the Renfe website, any experience?)

  4. If we decide the Renfe Spain Pass does not meet our needs, and since it is still 90 days before we travel,*** is it common for additional routes and/or promo and promo+ Preferente or Turista+ fares to be announced? For example, the Barcelona/Seville timetable is incomplete (and only Preferente full fair available now for the direct train). Is it wishful thinking a promo fare will come up by next month - I understand 30 May is probably included in the upcoming timetable changes.

  5. IF I get promo or promo+ Turista class tickets from Barcelona to Seville, instead of Preferente/Turista+, are the seats comfortable enough for almost 6 hour journey? Are they roomier than standard airline seats? Are there electrical outlets at each seat & pull down table/trays in Turista class? Enough room by seats to store our carryons?

Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to read through, and hopefully answer some of my questions. Cheers!

1-Yes, with 4 hours you have more than enough. If you land at T4 it makes more sense to use the Cercanías C1 Commuter train, it takes only 20 min from T4 to Atocha Cercanías (station connected to Puerta de Atocha). With you AVE ticket bought online, you get a ticket free of charge for the Cercanías train both in Madrid and in Barcelona (combinado Cercanías).
2-I would get Turista normal class. The seats are really wider than a plane, there is lots of places for luggage. All classes have power sockets and tables. There is hardly any difference between Turista, Turista + and Preferente. On preferente you get access to the Renfe lounge and meals are served only in weekdays. Most spaniards go in Turista, and they bring snacks from home or "bocadillos" or they go to the coffee coach.
Have a look at splitting your trip. Get 2 computers, and buy 4 tickets and the other computer for 1 person. This has the inconvinience of 1 person not sitting next to someone, but you can always ask someone or move inside the train.
When buying for 4 persons, you may get a Mesa (Table ) fare. It will be cheaper to do this, and 4 persons are seated around a table.
3-Renfe Spain pass is quite a mess. AVE trains are always quite busy, so you risk not getting a train at all. I would do just prebooked fares online.
4-Renfe is holding their promo fares because there is a big sale at 25 february at 00:00 spanish hour, when they will release lots of promo tickets for 25€ for all AVE routes. Note that that night Renfe website collapses, but try it at least. Then they will add more promo fares, wait a bit.
5-Turista is fine for me. Luggage can be placed over the racks above your seat, or at the compartment at the beginning of every coach. Note that you can't place luggage either in corridors or doors for safety reasons.

I agree with Joan. The regular Turista seating is fine. Use the massive amount of money you will save for some special sightseeing activities.

Thanks very much for your responses Joan G and acraven! Of course now a couple more questions come up -
-Regarding Renfe's 25 February midnight promo sale - WOW!! do you know if websites like loco2 have these prices available as well or limited to the Renfe website only? also, the two computers is a great idea!
-Regarding the MESA fare, is it only available in Turista class? I read somewhere (tripadvisor?) that the MESA seating was good for parents with small children but otherwise tighter quarters??
Thanks!

I don't know whether the legroom is the same at all tables, but I remember feeling a bit cramped when there was a normal-sized person sitting across from me. I'm 5'4" on a very good day.

Thanks very much for your response, Bill Sinclair and acraven. The detailed first hand knowledge of Preferente and Turista classes and the Mesa seating is MUCH appreciated!

BTW, Joan G, I did find some explanation online regarding the 25euro AVE tickets sale from a similar late December sale, so if the February sale is pretty much the same, my question is answered (only available on the Renfe website). Thanks again.

I believe many Americans have issues buying tickets from the Renfe website. You can of course try your regular credit card (after notifying the issuer that you plan to make a purchase from a European website), but the usual advise is to use PayPal, I think. It's often recommended that you set up an account with the ticket-issuer in advance.

Yeah, only on Renfe website. However, it can be really frustating. Only 25.000 tickets (25 thousand, do not know if it is comma or dot, in Spain is dot) will be released, so RUN for it.
For me a Mesa is good. I am quite tall (average spaniard) and I like the legroom. A Mesa is perfect for families with kids.

Was following this topic and had related question. Will be traveling this June from Santiago to Madrid and thought about pre-booking the ticket. I tried to find info online about the sale that is mentioned in this thread, but couldn't find anything. So is there some big train ticket sale about to occur, that could possibly cover this route and I should be looking at the renfre website then to see if there are any deals?

Thanks acraven and Joan G - appreciate your input and experience.

craig, I found information about the 25euro December 2017 sale that explained how that sale worked - I could not find anything on the February 2018 sale yet :/ However, IF the February 25th 2018 sale is similar, the explanation should help you. Here is the link:

So if I understand how the RENFE trains work, if I wanted to buy a ticket for this coming mid June, it is too early to pre-book at this point? But between now and then, they run these periodic sales so be on the lookout for them when they come out, and see if I can grab a cheaper ticket then? Sound right?

Pretty early, yeah. However, now you can buy tickets up to the 28/05/2018 btw Santiago de Compostela and Madrid (Chamartín)...so the tickets of june will come soon...check the website every day at a spanish normal hours (07:00 to 21:00). During the night the website fails more because they improve it.
This sale is unique, but maybe they do more. Who knows...
Instructions for Renfe website: insert origin, destination, date, how many people and click search. Forget about the other fields, unless you have a young renfe card discount (+Renfe Joven 50) or a Tarjeta Dorada (senior discount, you must have it, it asks for a code).
You will see the various type of trains available. Preferente is 1st class, turista is 2nd class, turista con enlace means you will have to switch trains somewhere and the connection is guaranteed. If you click on + you can select different fares to see which one suits you better.
Once you like your fare, click on next or the price with the arrow.
Leave DTO familia in blank (that is only for spanish large familes), solicitud Atendo (this is for disable people). Fill in the other details and select pasaporte (passport) and insert the number.
Leave in blank +Renfe card (this is a loyalty programme).
Select payment method (PayPal highly reccomended) and go. Once you have done everything, your tickets will be sent to your email. Print the PDF, and you're good to go. Easy!
