Planning a day trip to Dali Museum in Figures and Girona. Can I purchase a round trip ticket rail ticket from RENFE for Barcelona > Figures and Figures > Barcelona and stop off in Girona to see the sights and then continue back to Barcelona the same day or do I need to purchase seperate tickets forthe trains from Figures. >…Girona and Girona > Barcelona?

You cannot break your journey, separate tickets are required.

Ron, I did exactly this a month ago. I purchased only my ticket for the 8:25 am fast train from BCN Sants to Figueres in advance, before traveling to Spain. There was a promo price listed at about 10,75 €, very cheap. Then I left buying my other tickets, Figueres to Girona, then Girona to BCN, for during the day of the trip itself, dependent on when I felt like moving on at the moment. I did print out and take with me the schedules for those trains, so I easily knew my options, including the prices for each train, as they vary considerably. By the way, in Figueres there are two train stations, and you need to understand this to find full information. Fast trains use Figueres-Vilafant, outside of town a bit, while "normal" trains use Figueres, a station in town. Just one RR station in Girona, quite a ways from the historic part of the city. Between Figueres and Girona, there are more normal trains than fast trains, cheaper, station closer to town, and still only 35 minutes or so. Upon my evening arrival at BCN Sants I had an excellent rice pudding in the station's cafeteria!
