Reina Sofia museum scans ticket for exiting. Is this new?

Went yesterday. We bought the annual state pass from Museo Cerelbo ( no line! Friendly reception!) 2 days ago and yesterday at Reina Sofia, we showed our annual pass and they gave us paper tickets with QR code. We entered. We spent about 3 hours then upon exiting, they made everyone show their QR card passes to exit.

Sigh. Of course one us couldn’t find it and they impatiently waited for like longgggg wminutes while pockets emptied. (Old gum, other embarrassing oddities;) displayed to all. Starting to feel a bit like Hotel California situation but eventually they let us exit as we were holding up exit line. We weren’t the only party who had to show ticket stubs to exit. The whole line.

Rick Steves latest edition didn’t mention this, nor have we ever had to show tickets to exit at the numerous museums we’ve been through over the years. Did I somehow missed this detail or is this a new thing? Does anyone know ?

We’re having a beer and pondering….

We booked our tickets the day before cause we had timing issues. Anyway, we booked the free tickets since we are over 65 but it didn’t give us a timed entry. We were there before opening and the line was very short. When the workers came out to put up the ropes, they had a separate sign for ticket holders. So we went over there. When they asked for our tickets I showed them the email and QR scan code. They then told us since they were the free tickets we still needed to get paper tickets. Luckily she let us through because now the line was very long. And yes, we had to have our ticket scanned when we left.
