I think hubby and I would like to do a day trip to Montserrat that includes a tour of Monastery and a wine tour.
Looking for personal recommendations from folks who have done this; what tour group you used and thoughts on your experience.
We are absolutely looking for small group tour of no more than 8-10 people.
Traveling mid November.
Thank you!!!
We did Monserrat on our own, taking the early train and it was great.
Never read about a wine tour. Where is the wine part of the tour, at Montserrat or somewhere else?
Cissy, a friend of mine who lives in Spain, and is extremely knowledgeable about travel and food within Spain, recommended this company to me; they will craft a private tour for you that might include Montserrat and a cava producer. (The nearest vineyard will be in the Penedes area, where grapes for cava are grown and the wine is produced. the center of production, and home to the largest producers, is the town of St. Sadurni de Anoia. https://www.cava.wine/en/discover/wine-tourism-cava/visit-penedes/
I had planned to visit Montserrat and have a calcotada lunch (this was during calcite season) but the price ended up being too high for me, as I was solo. I think it would be worth sending them a note and asking what they could offer you..this is private, not with a group:

It would not be easy to do both on your own in one day, although if you wanted only to visit a cava producer from Barcelona, you could take the train to St. Sadurni and either visit Freixenet, near the station, or take a taxi from the station to another producer.
You'd then arrange a visit/tour/tasting directly with the producer that you choose.
Example would be:
Thank you for those links.
I agree the “private tour” route is pretty steep. Both Get Your Guide and Viator offer small group tours so I’m trying to get opinions from folks who have done it.
I’ll check the links you sent for more info. 😊
Cissy, my husband and I did this tour in Nov 2025. Loved it, highly recommend. It was a larger bus when we started the tour, but at the monastery, the groups broke off and it was a smaller group that went to the winery.

That looks like what we want for the day. Thank you!!
That looks good.
Have you been on a winery tour before? I'm just asking because fi your time in Barcelona is limited, and I think it is, maybe you would not want to spend time tasting wines.....something you could do in all of the restaurants you will visit. I am probably not the best person to advise on this, though. My partner was in the wine business and we've been to so very many wineries all over Spain and Italy...after a while, it loses it's appeal, at least for me, but I guess if you've not had the experience before, or you are a real wine aficionado, your view would be different. I think that particular winery features reds, if that makes a difference to you....
What an odd reply.
I don't think it's an odd suggestion at all. There's only one Monserrat, while wineries are a dime a dozen. Why waste your Monserrat day doing something that you could do so many other places? Even if you don't agree, it's hardly odd to suggest.
Thank you, Chris.
You don't mention how many days you have in Barcelona, and I think that makes quite a difference.
First, I'd ask yourselves what you're actually looking for from the wine part. Are you wine enthusiasts, serious connoisseurs, or mainly looking for a nice experience, some good wine and a bit of socialising?
If it's more about the experience, history and setting, Codorníu is quite impressive: centuries of history, Modernista architecture, vast underground cellars that you actually tour on a little train, cava, etc. If you're genuinely into wine, I'd probably look instead at smaller producers in the Penedès where the focus is much more on the vineyard and the product itself, and sometimes you can also talk directly with the producers/owners -especially in small vineyards.
But there's another issue: without a car, combining Montserrat and the Penedès independently in one day isn't particularly practical. They're not well connected to each other by public transport.
So if you only have a few days in Barcelona, an organised small-group Montserrat + winery tour probably makes sense. Just check carefully what they mean by “small group”, because 8–10 people and 20 people are very different experiences.
If you have enough days, though, I'd personally separate them. Montserrat is very easy to do independently from Barcelona and deserves a day without constantly looking at the clock. Then do the Penedès on another day and choose the winery based on what you actually want from the wine experience rather than whichever one happens to be included in a Montserrat package.
Thank you. 😊
We did the Castle experience tour company last year. We did the one that was all day that had the longest time at Montserrat. It was recommended by a friend. We do like going to wineries while on vacation. Thought this was a way to do both.
I would not suggest this company. It was a small group but there are 50 of you on one bus & multiple buses leave at a time. We just barely got to see the black Madonna from afar. People that got on bus two did not because mass was starting
Then it was time to go to the winery or so we thought after racing to get back found out another group was delayed. We waited an hour to an hour and half on the bus just sitting in the parking lot
Before leaving for the winery.
When we got there it was like a wedding service. Hundreds of people getting served lunch. Our guide had to take another bus and we were pretty much on our own
After lunch we were broken off again to smaller groups
And for our delay we did get to have one more additional tasting.
The wine was fine but not Cava
We went on a food tour the night before and people did a similar but slightly more expensive one with Devour. I wished we had done that one
Our day was disappointing and for them saying small groups it really was not
That’s great info. Thank you for sharing. I’m sorry your experience was disappointing but really appreciate this info.
