I need a recommendation for a hotel in Toledo for one night in November. Our preference is something near Plaza de Zocodover. Extra credit if you can recommend a rental car office in a convenient location in Toledo! ;)
We always stay at Hotel Maria Cristina. It about a 10 minutes walk from the main gate to the city, so not inside the historic center as you would prefer. We get our rental car upon arrival at Madrid airport, then usually go to Toledo for a night to get over the let lag.
Not a hotel, but we stayed in this apartment in Toledo: https://www.casadelosmozarabes.com/
It is right off Zocodover, but quiet. We loved staying here.
I’m going to give you this one because we enjoyed it so much, and the breakfast was one of the best during our entire three weeks last year. It’s El Greco. It’s near the synagogue. We took a taxi from the train station - very handy and such a beautiful view of the town as he drove to our hotel.
We took the short walk to the cathedral plaza each evening and heard a person playing wonderful Spanish guitar.
One of Rick's recommendations in Toledo is http://www.laposadademanolo.com/web/en/ . We've just returned from Spain and spent two nights there - highly recommended. It's a small hotel immediately beside the cathedral. Quiet.
Plaza de Zocodover is very busy and not really an area where I would want to stay, simply for that reason. But La Posada de Manolo is only a 5 or 10 minute walk away from the Plaza.
Another vote for the El Greco - Pintore El Greco? Stayed there maybe eight yrs ago - great room with view, very good breakfast, location, & overall atmosphere. Look for a car rental office outside of the upper city. We'd driven from Madrid, & negotiating Toledo's rabbit warren of tiny streets, not easy.
But staying in Toledo, ahh!
Thanks so much for the recommendations. I had already booked Hotel Santa Isabel, based on RS guide. It sounds like it will be lovely and the price is right. Hopefully, it will be as nice as some of the recommendations that have been made. Thanks again!
Looks like a nice hotel. Since the hotel is only a couple minutes walk away, take a couple minutes to go visit the “pozo amargo,” the bitter well on Calle pozo amargo. Yes it’s only a well and only worth a few minutes stop, but there is a legend behind it (just search on, bitter well Toledo) that makes it worth the stop. Most tourists who walk by it, probably have no idea there’s a story behind it.
Thanks for the tip on the well. I will look up the story. Any other recommendations for Toledo would be fantastic including restaurants, good photo spots, etc.
I’ll stay away from the normal tourist recommendations. Along the outside of the city is the Mirador del Valle. From it you can get the same “View of Toledo” that’s in El Greco’s painting. The Army museum at the Alcazar was very interesting to me since one could see where the civilians lived during the seige of Toledo during the Spanish civil war. If you like swords, visit Mariano Zamorano sword smith. It makes high quality swords and is worth a short visit depending on what he’s making at the time you’re there. When visiting some shops, watch for people hand making the Damascene ware. Generally, they are by the entrance or just inside. Also look down since some shops have glass tiles allowing you to see ancient ruins beneath. For whatever reason I have a fascination with the Bridge of San Martin. Like the well, there is an interesting legend behind it too. You can get great views of it from a few places inside the city, or, walk across the bridge and get a shot of it and the city together. Finally, if you walk out the city by the Alfonso VI gate, walk a block down Avenida de la reconquista, and on the left is the ruin of a Roman Circus. If you happened to get onto Avenida de Carlos III, it will be on the right.
I was last there in 2014 and don’t remember any restaurants.
