Rail travel between Barcelona and Madrid on a Sunday in Sept

I am returning to Barcelona on a Sunday in Sept from trekking in the Pyrenees for a week. I would like to avoid staying over 1 night in Barcelona and rather catch a train to Madrid and secure lodging there.

Would appreciate any assistance that you can offer on fastest train between the two cities and which station is the most efficient to leave from?

Also, I would appreciate suggestions on a affordable hotel close to the train station in Madrid. I plan to do day trips to Toledo and Segovia . Any advice on logistics of getting to both these cities from Madrid?

Thanking everyone in advance for assistance!!

The last two trains of the day depart Barcelona Sants station at 20:00 (arriving 23:10) and 21:25 (arriving 23:55). Arrival is at Madrid Puerta de Atocha station; you can see hotels on Google Maps, etc. You can buy tickets in any train station, or save money by locking in the date and time now at www.renfe.es (use PayPal to avoid credit card declines) or through international agents like Rail Europe or Captain Train.
