Quick Guide to See Madrid in 1-2 Days Sites/Restaurants

Hello all you worldly travelers!

I am visiting Madrid for about 1 to 1.5 days and would like just a few quick suggestions on sites and eateries. You can throw in a suggestion for scenic evening/morning photos as well!

I am not going all out crazy trying to wear my older self out trying to see everything just a few important historical sites and perhaps churches, parks etc. Im also quite interested in local fare and prefer the lesser well known spots for coffee/hot chocolate and good tapas. Would it be wise to get a local 1 day/2day bus or transit pass?

Appreciate ANY and all feedback and thank you in advance!

The Royal Palace is beautiful. You don't have a lot of time, but if you've never seen an aqueduct and aren't a fan of art museums(The Prado is my #2 site), I would consider the day trip to Segovia.

Just walking around the city would be good enough for me.
For a hot chocolate I recommend El Riojano. It is a bakery which looks very small but it has a lovely cafe in the back. We had our
hot chocolate there with our guide and can't imagine the recommended San Gines is any better. And as a bonus, you can sit down and be waited on.
It is located just around the corner from San Gines.

Retiro Park and Alcalá Gate and a walk down Paseo del Prado/Paseo de Recoletos to Fuente de Neptuno, then to Plaza de Cibeles.

If you’re a Botero fan, his Lady with Mirror sculpture is at Cristóbal Colón plaza further down that avenue. There’s another of his sculptures outside the airport terminal. At the same plaza is the Lucky Frog sculpture.

The Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol area is good for people watching. Beware of pickpockets.

The Royal Palace over to Temple de Debod, then back to Plaza de España with the statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, then to the Gran Vía for building architecture.

For lesser sites, the Puente de Toledo and Puerta de Toledo make for a short stop. En route there’s the Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena with its modern interior.

If you’re a Francisco Goya fan, an off the beaten path site is Ermita de San Antonio de la Florida. It has a few of his paintings and his tomb. It’s free to enter and doesn’t take long to see.

With your very limited time, I wouldn’t spend a chunk of it visiting museums. However, if you found yourself with a little time in the evening, consider the free hours at the Prado and Reina Sofía. You could get a good feel for one or the other without sacrificing site seeing time.

I too recommend the mentioned places for churros and chocolate. Both are within a couple minutes walk of the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. Mercado San Miguel off the Plaza Mayor is a popular food venue and it’s always very busy.

I’ve never purchased a bus pass since every place I mentioned is walkable. Not that they are close together, but walkable.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the recommendations.

I had no clue about El Riojano which I will definitely visit.

Also all the great places to just site see such as Plaza de Espana and of course Plaza Mayor.

Is there also a part of Madrid with modern architecture like a design district?

So based on the information from jaime no need for a local transit pass which will be a little extra incentive for more tapas.

Also, there are two busses (numbers 1 and 2) that are free to ride and could save some walking. You can look up the routes on the link.
