Question about the key to Rick Steves’ Spain

I am in the process of planning a trip to Spain. And as such, I am reading Rick Steves’ Spain.

This may be a silly question, but I am stumped as to what the asterisk(s) following a recommended hotel reference. For example, there will be a number of $, the name of the establishment followed by two or three asterisks.

Any information will be much appreciated. I’ve googled the heck out of it and keep coming up empty.

Are you reading Rick Steves Best of Spain? What year is your edition?
I have the 2019 edition and there are $$$ but no asterisks.

I believe that's a key to the country's rating system for hotels (2-star, 3-star or 4-star hotels, in other words). In the back of the book, under "Sleeping," you can probably find information about what these ratings signify in Spain.

Look in the chapter “Practicalities” under “Types of Accommodation” and see if it is explained there. That is where it is explained in the France book.

For example, in the France book it says, “The French have a simple hotel rating system based on amenities and rated by stars (indicated in this book by asterisks, * through *****)”

Oh! Thank you all. It has got to be the star rating!
