Question about. making connection at Miami Fl International Airport

my trip is coming up .....

I am flying from Austin TX to Miami and then connecting to Barcelona flying American all the way.

I was in the Miami airport once some years back and found it very confusing but with very nice and helpful staff.

For those more familiar than myself with the Miami Airport, do I change terminals when I fly in domestically and need to connect to an international flight? How easy is the walk from American domestic to American International?

I my have to check my bag. Do I have to get it upon arriving in Miami and then. check it again to Barcelona?

Hi,
Leaving the US, you do not have to collect your checked bags at the US connecting airport (Miami in your case). However, if you have a connection in the US on the way back, then yes, you have to collect and recheck luggage (the process is simpler than for real luggage check-in at the start of the trip).

Thank you Balso

When I returned from Lisbon last trip, I had to collect my luggage in Boston and check it again before flying on to Austin. I was flying Delta and it was super easy.

Hello Eric

Thank you for the link.

I joined through facebook but find the site very complicated. it reminds me of cruise critic or Trip Advisor forums

How do I ask a question. What do I click on? I find no way to post a new discussion.

Passed through Miami in the spring on way to Panama. Their transport system, like a sky train, was shut down and had been for years and no future dates for opening. The funding is already allocated, but no move on the doing.
So. Be prepared for long walks.

Thank you treemoss2

About how long is the walk? Is signage clear?

I am old and I have an arthritic knee.

My husband and I had to connect through Miami (international arrival to domestic departure) a few months back. We had 1 checked bag to pick up then recheck through to our final destination in the US. The place is chaotic and signage can be confusing but after watching YouTube videos from travelers transiting through to make their connection made it so much easier to get around. You will have a lot of walking! And be sure to allow yourself plenty of time for your connection.

hello marciaandcb

I was at Miami Internationl one or two times some years ago and found it very confusing but there were very nice staff to help us bewildered travelers. That was their position, to help confused travelers, and they were out in the terminals watching for us.

I was either arriving or leaving MIA and did not have to transfer planes.

I was hoping that the situation had greatly improved but I guess not.

I believe that I have a 4 hour layover so that should be enough time. I hope.

Returning, I am making connections in Philadelphia.
