Puerta del Sol - Plaza to Madrid Airport

What is the most efficient way to go from the Puerta del Sol area of Madrid to the Madrid Barajas Airport? Thanks.

We took a taxi from our hotel on the Puerto del Sol for a flat rate of 30 euros, arranged by the hotel.

We take the metro. Right now due to some construction you’d go from Sol to Goya, switch lines and go to the Mar de Cristal station, then switch lines to the airport. Most efficient, no, but not expensive either. It will take about 40 minutes.

The construction jaimeelsabio mentions should be over soon, if not already. But the metro is still a 2-change trip from Sol, however you cut it.

From Sol, you can also take Cercanias, the commuter trains, though not directly. You'd take any northbound train to either of the next two statins—Nuevos Ministerios of Chamartin— and there change to C1/C10 to terminal 4.

Cercianias is my pick when flying out of T4 (Iberia and all the OneWorld airlines), but getting to the other terminals this way is more hassle. For terminals 1-2-3 I'd take the subway.

Returned from Spain today and the construction was completed on 28 May. We took the metro from Sol, to Principe de Vergara, to Colombia, to the airport. Cost was 5€ per person (2€ fare and 3€ airport supplement). It took 50 minutes because at both places where we switched lines, we just missed the train.
