Public Transportation Madrid Atocha

We will be arriving via AVE on 23, November at 9:25 AM. We are staying at Calle Mayor 40 and I am wondering what the best way to get there would be. Is there public transportation avail, bus? We could walk but appears about 20 min w/luggage. Another question I have is when give an address like Calle Mayor IV, Calle Mayor 40 2" Izq 28013 Madrid Spain, I am looking for an explanation. I guess I don't know what the 2 Izq is. Any help appreciated.

Is that an apartment? What I see at Calle Mayor, 40 on Google street view is a gelato shop named Amorino. But just out of this photo on the left is a door, with the number 40 above. Is that where you are going? Maybe the second floor? Izq. May be an abbreviation for izquierda, or left.

Actually the cercanias is easier than the metro to Sol (aka Vodaphone Sol). It's less crowded and you can take the elevator from the train level to street level. By metro you'll have to climb a flight of stairs with your luggage.

With your AVE tickets, you get a free ride on the cercanias. You need to get tickets either from a machine or an agent, using the code on your AVE ticket.

Chani thank you so much. Sorry but I don't know what a Cercanias is. I am assuming the Metro is a Bus (that is what we call them in NY) So if you could explain a little more I would appreciate it.

Cheryl, the Metro is a subway. Cercanias are local trains (as opposed to fast trains like AVEs).

The cercanias is suburban rail - makes fewer stops in Madrid than the metro does and runs less frequently. Other than that, it's about the same. There are several cercanias lines.
