What is the best way to get from the BCN airport to Tarragona by public transportation? I looked at the bus schedule online and we would have to wait 1 1/2 hours. Only found Bus Plana. By train, it looks like you have to go from airport into Sants station (into the city) to catch a train to Tarragona.
As always, the "best way" is in the eye of the beholder. Is the best way the cheapest, the fastest, the most convenient? The bus service you mention goes every 1 1/2 hours. How do you know you will land on time, get your luggage, and if necessary, get through passport control quickly? So 1 1/2 hours is the worst case. It might end being very timely.
Yes, to go by train you will have to go to Sants station to get a train to Tarragona. This may end up being the cheapest option, and trains to Sants go every 1/2 hour.
Looks like there may also be a shuttle service for more money.

There's no need to backtrack to Sants if you go by train; you can take a westbound train at El Prat de Llobregrat to Sant Vicenç de Calders and change there for Tarragona. Should be faster, too.
Thank you both for your answers. The renfe line from Barcelona to Tarragona is currently under construction. So you go by bus from el prat station to Sant Vicenc de Calders, then you get on the train. We decided to wait for the bus at the airport. It was just easier since we were carrying our baggage.
