Private Tour - Spain

Hello,
My family of 3 plan on spending 2 weeks in Spain in early June. While in Seville, we would like to hire a private tour guide to take us out of the city and through the small towns. Any recommendations?

Also, Viator tours comes up a lot in my searches. Are they a good tour company?

Thank you!
Stephanie

Viator is not a tour company.

They provide no tours or services.

They advertise tours provided by actual tour guides as their own and charge a pretty penny to the vendor to get them business.

You are much better dealing direct, as in most things.

Think of Viator as the "Airbnb for tours", it's an online marketplace for both group and private tours, it profits by receiving a commission from each booking. I've used Viator a number of times in cities around the world and I found it was a great way to browse and hire local guides, I've had no issues so far, just need to do a little research and check the reviews on the site, they are usually reliable.

We have used Tours by Locals numerous times in several different countries. We have never been disappointed. We have also hired guides through our Amex Platinum Travel service. Rick posted guides for Spain in his guide marketplace. If they don’t cover Seville - they can likely refer you to someone who can.

I have been working with Spain Private Guides for our trip coming up next month:

They do custom tours only, so you can let them know what you want and they will build an itinerary. I have been very happy with my interactions throughout the planning process, although I haven't actually used the services yet.

I follow Jorge Roman. He is a Rick Steves guide in Spain. He is also doing his own tours and is part of the Guide Collective. He may be willing to do day or small group tours. I follow him on Facebook. He seems like such a nice man and an engaging tour guide. travelingwithjorge.wordpress.com If you look for him on Facebook, he does a lot of virtual tours which are fun and interesting. He seems to mainly do Madrid (and day trips to places like Segovia) and Andalusia.

Tours by Locals, Viator, Get Your Guide, Air BnB Experiences are all charging the guides a hefty 25-30% commission to book a tour. If you can book directly, please do so.

I would recommend to use the official guides, https://apitsevilla.com/, belonging to CEFAPIT, the official association of guides in Spain. All of them independent and experienced guides. In any case, those listed on an internet search are all reliable companies too. ToursByLocals, GetYourGuide, Viator......get an incredibly high commission of 25 or even 30% off your guide´s income, so they (we) are forced to offer higher prices to cover for this "loss". It´s another way of working, but if you can go with an independent guide, the experience will be identical and the guide will be happier, no doubt.

Love Jorge! I did a thoroughly enjoyable half-day private tour of Madrid with him last week. Not sure if he guides in Seville but definitely ask him—use the email listed on his website. If he himself does not, he can probably recommend someone.

In 2017, we used Naturanda for a day trip to Jerez de la Frontera and Cadiz. It was us and one other couple. I believe that they do offer private tours. Naturanda was easy to work with before the tour. Our guide's English was not the best. He told us that Jerez de la Frontera was famous for "sherry, bulls, and whores" - he meant horses! But his services as a guide were excellent. I would definitely use this company again.
