Post Barcelona Trip

We are traveling to Barcelona in early March, and want to go somewhere for 3-4 days afterwards before we head home. Open to all suggestions (Spain or elsewhere)! Thank you!

Go to Seville Spain for 3 to 4 days after Barcelona and explore some of the Andalusian region, the white wash hilltop villages near Seville, or you can venture off to the magnificent city of Valencia Spain. The Algarve region in Portugal is also another option. It is a few hours from Southern Spain and the opportunity to visit towns like Albufeira should not be missed.

Do you have to return to Barcelona before you head home? In that case I'd probably want to stick to places that don't take too long to reach. If you spend the better part of a day traveling in both directions, your 3-4 days will be 1-2 days. Will you have already covered Catalunya, or just Barcelona?

Thank you RJean! These are all great suggestions.
Albufeira looks so beautiful! Do you think it will be too cold in early March?

Another post had a similar situation, in which they had a handful of spare days and weren't sure where to spend them. I am not sure about your interests, but since you will already be in Catalonia, maybe you could spend those 3-4 days in the medieval-walled town of Girona?

Girona is an ancient city in northern Catalonia, it's about 40 min north of Barcelona via the AVE high-speed train. It has an impressive Cathedral, towering medieval walls, narrow winding streets, a Moorish bath complex, and one of the best preserved Jewish Quarters in Europe. The Onyar river snakes it's way through Girona, giving the town a Florence-esque feel. Using Girona as a base, one can do some pretty interesting day trips around northern Catalonia too, like the ruins of an ancient Greek colony or medieval mountain-villages in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Thank you Acraven. We do not have to travel back to Barcelona to return home. And, I have not been to Catalunya (other than Barcelona.)

Thank you Carlos - that sounds really nice. We won't have a car - does that matter for the day trips?

Ditto Girona! You could go there for 3-4 days. You do not need a car. You can take the train. Its an hour from Barcelona. From Girona, you could take some day trips. One I'd highly recommend is Besalu. You can get there easily by bus.

Girona is a quick trip from Barcelona on the AVE. (Buy tickets early to avoid last-minute-ticket sticker shock). I'd say it has at least a solid day's worth of sights. From a base in Girona, Figueres (Dali Theatre and Museum) is easily reached by AVE. Beyond Figueres, this time by bus, you have Cadaques and the nearby Dali House, which is actually I Port Lligat. Cadaques was a beautiful white former fishing village (now touristy) dripping with bougainvillea when I traveled there during the summer of 2016. I don't know what you could espect in early March. You can also go to Besalu (with a fortified bridge and small medieval district) from Girona by bus.

There's also Montserrat (not sure about early March weather since it's not at sea level) and Tarragona (Roman ruins). I haven't been to either of those.

Sitges is an artsy coastal town south of Barcelona, but March might be a bit early, at least for a weekday visit.

If you have a yen for France, the pretty (and touristy) small town of Collioure is less than 2 hours from Girona by train. Again, I don't know about March.

No need for a car, the day trips I mentioned, like the Greek ruins at Empúries or the medieval town of Besalú, are accessible by bus.

How long are you going to be in Barcelona? What are your dates? Valencia has Las Fallas from March 15-19 and it is extraordinary. If you can catch the beginning it would definitely be my choice. Even without Las Fallas, there's enough in Valencia for 3 days.

November 2017, rented a car overnight in Girona. We drove to Figueres to see Dali Museum & his house in Port Lligat. We enjoyed Cadaques for lunch on the beach and walked the town. I became more of a Salvador Dali fan after my 5th grader knew about the melting clock from math class. Neat museum in St. Petersburg Florida too!

Kathy you can stay in the Costa Brava region since it is near Barcelona. It consists of towns like Girona, Pals, Cadaques, and Blanes. Since you will not be renting a car, I believe you can take either buses or trains to visit the towns.
