Port of Barcelona Information

I am reading that the Port of Barcelona will be closing and that cruise ships will be sailing from Tarragon beginning Spring 2024.

But I have also read that that applies only to the terminals that are close to the center of Barcelona and that the terminals further away will remain open.

So what are the facts.

thank you jaimeee

that article was recent and maybe it is applicable until the new port is open in Spring 2024????? I think it is referring to the end of October 2023 until ?????

Because I have read online that a new port is being built in Tarragon that wii open in Spring 2024 and most or all of the cruise ships that ported in Barcelona will move to Tarragon.

I guess time will tell.

Can you link where you read this information? It seems very unlikely that Tarragona will be the new docking port for Barcelona. Tarragona already has a port but it's not so big, plus it's like an 1:30 hr drive to Barcelona so not very practical. The Port of Barcelona is also one of the most important in the Mediterranean, I don't think it's closing anytime soon

The only thing I have heard is that cruise ships docking in Barcelona must now dock at the Moll d’Adossat, located further south from the city center, instead of the World Trade Center pier, which is right next to the south entrance of Las Ramblas. So now cruise ship passengers will have to walk an extra 30 minutes to get to the city centre. Perhaps this is what you are thinking about?

Hi thank you for the extra information, from what you have provided it looks like they are building a new cruise ship terminal in Tarragona to attract cruise ships to also stop in Tarragona, it's not to replace the Port of Barcelona.

The Port of Barcelona IS NOT closing, or banning cruise ships for that matter.

Barcelona has several ports and marinas. One of them, Port Vell -which serves cruise ships- is reorganising its docks and piers and cruise ships will all be docking in a large area with five terminals located further away from the centre. That's it. As mentioned, Barcelona is one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean, both commercially and touristically, and will continue to be so in the future.

On the other hand, the Port of the city of Tarragona -located 100 km from Barcelona- has recently announced the building of new terminals to receive more cruise ships.

Thanks for the update Enric.

I am going to be booking a cruise for next October that leaves and returns to Barcelona on NCL Escape.

interesting stuff. sounds like booking a cruise will need to pay close attention. Maybe in the future the smaller ships can keep using Barcelona and the monster ships go to Taragon.

Are the residents getting tourist fatigue already? Without adding more ships.

Hi GoWest

Well, we will soon find out what will happen when this new cruise port opens since it is going to open Spring 2024. That is coming up fast.

I don't think so, Tarragona is not prepared for very large cruisers. They'll keep mooring in Barcelona, but perhaps in smaller quantities, since many locals are demanding a reduction in both mass tourism as well as in pollution caused by these large ships. These days, we've been hosting up to twelve very large cruisers on the same day, dumping more than 60,000 people in one go into the city, on top of those visiting by plane, train and car... this isn't sustainable and it's pushing certain areas of the city into the limit.
