Please help me plan my trip in May

Arriving to Madrid, then have to be back to Madrid 7 days later for work. Thinking of: staying in Madrid the first night then taking the train to Barcelona after that and staying there until I have to return to Madrid. We have a toddler and will be meeting family there as well. Should we stay in Barcelona that entire time or do something else?

Never been to Spain before and most likely won't be able to come again anytime soon. I want to have a great experience but not drag my toddler all over the country either or spend all our time traveling. Would appreciate any suggestions!

You don't say when you are traveling. It would be helpful to know your interests in order to give you advice. Do you like museums, architecture, historic sights, beaches, shopping......?

I happen to love Barcelona so that would be my first choice.

If you choose Barcelona you don't have to worry about spending all your time traveling. It is about a 3 hour train ride from Madrid's Atocha Station to Barcelona Sants.

steve,

Thank you! Do you think it makes more sense to stay within walking distance to Barcelona sites versus the beach or Stiges for instance? We do love the beach but also want to see the sites while we're there.

as I responded you in TA... I'd choose to stay in the city and I told you why too :))

Also... since you're coming over with a toddler, perhaps these can be of interest to you: http://www.kidsinbarcelona.com and for renting say a prom or any other stuff you might need: http://www.easytravelkids.com and http://www.babytravelling.com Regarding special food for babies, you will find plenty at any of the many pharmacies and also in supermarkets spread across all the city so it's very easy to find one nearby. Note though that products in pharmacies tend to be more specialized hence more expensive.

Reading between the lines I sense you might want more variety than just one destination. You can easily fill a week in Barcelona, however heading south to Andalusia and you also have a myriad of possibilities. Split your time between Sevilla and Granada to make it easy with your little one. Make a visit to Córdoba for the Mazquita. In Granada of course you have the Alhambra, and in Sevilla the Alcazar and Cathedral. May is the perfect time to visit as well.

If you decide on Barcelona then choose a hotel location close to the Passeig de Gracia station. From here you can be on a direct train (C2) to Sitges, arriving in approx 45mins. I think staying in town would be better, where you can make an easy decision about getting to the beach each day once you see what the weather brings.
