After doing the Rick Steves Spain tour and cruising around Portugal, we are training back to Barcelona and the next morning catching a 6:20 flight to Amsterdam. We have looked at airport hotels and they are either over the top cost-wise or they get pretty bad reviews. Has anyone had any experience getting to the airport pretty quickly for an early flight? Are there hotels you'd recommend and what are the best transportation links?
Check out this Gran Via location offering easy access to both the airport and city centre.

FGC train (line 8) is closeby to take you to Plaza Espana for further metro connections.
No real expertise for you, Susan, but if a 6:20 am flight means being at the airport at 4:20 am, you might as well just have a late dinner, maybe take in some mellow jazz, and then head for the airport at about 1:00 or 2:00 am!
The only means of transport at those hours are either bus #46 (which I don't advise because it's not a direct bus to the airport but a regular bus) and taxi. Metro starts at 5am as do the train and Aerobus services.
