Picnic practicalities for a day trip to Montserrat

Hello! We are doing a day trip to Montserrat during our trip to Barcelona. As per Rick's suggestion in the guide book, we plan to purchase meats/cheeses/etc. at the market in Barcelona before heading there in the AM so we can have a picnic lunch on the mountain. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep the meats and cheeses at a safe, cold temperature for the several hours between purchasing and eating? We could carry a collapsible, insulated bag, but what should we use for the cold pack?

On a trip last year, we stayed in an AirBnB and were able to freeze some plastic bottles of water in the freezer overnight -- they worked as our ice to keep lunch items cold as well as our drinking water for the day. We won't have a fridge (mini or otherwise) this time, so any and all advice is much appreciated!

You may be overthinking this just a bit. Your meats and cheeses are not going to spoil on the little jaunt from Barcelona to Montserrat.

Hi Tim, thanks for your reply. We will be picking up our picnic goods between 7:30-8am, but not eating them until closer to 12:30-1pm while we are up at Montserrat. I'm not comfortable with the meats/cheeses going that long without a way to keep them cold, so maybe we will just eat non-refrigerated goods on our picnic. That will be plan B, anyway!

I am curious as to what others do, though!

Ah, Bill, we shall eat like kings! Thank you! I will write all this down as a shopping list and follow your picnicking advice. So helpful; thank you!!

We always picnicked on bread, cheese, tomatoes, strawberries in season etc -- none of that stuff would be or needs to be refrigerated. Many sausages are designed to store at room temperature as well.
