We will be traveling to Barcelona in September. We are looking for a slow paced vacation this time with maybe one more location. We enjoy it all. Museums, churches, day trips, beach time, food and wine. I'd like to pick one more location to travel to after Barcelona. Preferably along the ocean. What town would be your next choice and why? Thank you !
... a picturesque retreat somewhere in Costa Brava, north of Barcelona but still within Catalonia?...
What ^^^^ (my friend Enric) just said.
My personal favourite part of the Costa Brava is the coastline ....
Tamariu - Llafranc - Calella de Palafrugell.
You don't say how long you are visiting and where you go afterwards. Those two answers would dramatically affect the reasonable suggestions you might get.
Initially my suggestions, based on your stated interests, would be Valencia or San Sebastian.
San Sebastian is lovely. The train from Barcelona took about 3 hours.
Probably 10 days each. Or some varience of that. Then home to the U.S. Haven't bought plane tickets yet.
Barcelona could and did keep me interested for ten days, but I have a feeling Valencia and San Sebastian would not. However, you could visit the intriguing Cuenca and Teruel from Valencia; the former would probably require an advance-purchase AVE ticket to be affordable. I assume there are some nice coastal towns as well.
San Sebastian is rather small, but the Basque Country is lovely, and you'd be able to see Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Hondarribia, and a number of charming coastal villages.
Best train time for Barcelona to San Sebastián/ Donostia is 5hr 33min.
With 20 nights, and looking for variety I would go for ...
Barcelona - 7 nights
Costa Brava - 5 nights
San Sebastián & Bilbao - 5 nights
Valencia - 3 nights
Thanks for the suggestions ! I will research those destinations.
