Performance at Palau de la Musica

Will be in Barcelona in March with wife and would like to surprise her with a performance. The three choices for when we will be there are:

1) Orquestra Filharmonia de Barcelona - performing Mozart

2) Barcelona Guitar Trio and Dance (with Manuel Gonzalez, Xavier Coll, and Luis Robisco)

3) Opera y Flamenco - "Historia de un amor"

Anyone have input as to which of these might be best? Also I was hoping to get some advice on seating areas inside the venue. I don't need to have the best seats but the map is somewhat confusing. Where have you sat and did you like it?

Thanks!

Well, nothing against Mozart, of course, but since you'll be in Spain, to me it seems more special to go for something Spanish.

I vote for #2 - Barcelona Guitar Trio and Dance. Last summer, we saw a wonderful flamenco show at the Palau de la Musica. Since we wanted to see the dancers and musicians (guitarist and percussion) up close, we booked first row box seats on the side overlooking the stage. We were very happy with our seats. I noticed that the first row, center balcony seats looked great, too!

Gee, they all sound excellent.

I took the tour there which begins with a video. One of the few things I remember about the video is Zubin Mehta extolling the theatre's accoustics. So if you are classical music lovers, [1] would be special.

If not, [2] and [3] both include flamenco dancers. [2] has Spanish guitars which I love. The website includes a short video of the guitar performance. You can listen to the Mozart works on YouTube. I didn't look for them, but you can probably find the music from [3] on YouTube, maybe some of the dances too. Choose the one that suits your tastes most.

If you are going to [1], then it may not matter where you sit, I think you'll have a better view of the wonderful concert hall if you are in the balcony seats opposite the stage (that's where the tour takes you to get a view of the hall). If you choose [2] or [3], you'll want a good close view of the performers. You may want to take opera glasses or small binoculars too. When you go to the seat map on the website, click on a seat and there's a small picture on the right that shows the view from that seat.

They change the configuration of the hall somewhat for different concerts, so for [2] and [3], the stage will probably be smaller than for [1] which has to accommodate a full orchestra and chorus.

Thank you Chani and friends, I just bought my ticket for Gran Gala Flamenc in mid-April at the Palau, first row center of the balcony. Can't wait! Should I also take the tour of the Palau earlier in the week, or would that be overkill?

During a performance you will only see the main hall -where the performance is offered- while in a visit (tour) you get to see other areas of the Palau.

I'm jealous. I'll be in Barcelona earlier in March and none of your choices were available. The only part of the tour that I remember that you wouldn't see is the introductory video. But you would get great views from different parts of the concert hall, the small balcony, the staircases, etc. on the tour. But there are so many other great sights in Barcelona. Well, I guess the only good answer is return to Barcelona to see some of what you'll miss on this visit.

I'm confused - you started by saying March, but then you got tickets for mid-April. How long are you in Barcelona? Maybe I'm even more jealous :-)

Congrats on finding an experience so often passed by. Do take the tour in addition to attending the concert (wise choice on your selection). Do dress up for the occasion. Don't attempt to take photos during the concert, but do hang around after the concert and snap a couple of photos. Do be prepared to be blown away by the ceiling.
Since 2005 the Palau has been a must attend experience for us and we have set in various seats throughout the hall and enjoyed every experience.
Enjoy!

Actually, Chani, you and OP Emergency Doc mentioned March, but I never did. I do not march, I meander, saunter, stroll, crawl, poke around, even climb, but I do not march. I will be in Barcelona April 11 until 20, and in other parts of Spain until May 7. Especially in Barcelona my planning is finding so many great sites and experiences, it is tough to prioritize, especially as I am considering up to four day trips to Tarragona, Girona/Figueres, Montserrat and Besalu/other medieval villages. I would like to include a tour of the Palau de la Musica earlier in the week before the performance I will attend, but may find I want to visit other places a first time instead.

Hey,

We were in Barcelona this past September, and were lucky enough to catch the Maestros de La Guitarra and dance. Senores Gonzales, Coll, and Robisco are without peer, and were incredible. A night we will not soon forget. The dancers, Jose Alvarez, and Carolina Morgado were also magnificent.
Sorry I can't speak to the other concerts, but without doubt, they will be great.

A C

Congrats on getting front row center balcony seats! Yes, do dress up and bring your camera for photos before and after the show. Enjoy!
