What is the best way to pay the tolls? Can/should we pay as we go or add it to our car rental plan? We are driving from Porto to northern Spain and back. Thanks!

You can pay as you go. If you have the time you can avoid the AP toll roads by driving on the N roads. It will take a little longer, but you’d get to see Galicia from something other than the highway.

We drove from Santiago along the coast as far as Santillana del Mar toll free. Very good highway, we continued through the Picos and down to Leon, never encountered a toll.
