Passport requests for hotel transportation from airport to hotel

I’ve recently been looking for hotels on Spain that offer transportation to and from the airport. Upon inquiring, some replies have mentioned that for confirmation of the transportation reservation they require either my DNI or passport number. Is this a new regulation in Spain? Just curious to know if anyone who has booked private transfer to and from have been required or asked to provide this number in order to reserve.

No. Often have to give a copy of the passport to the hotel or forward passport number with the reservation to the hotel. It is just number if you are concerned about fraud. I have no reservation about doing it and have done it frequently.
