Parque Natural Cabo de Gata

I'll be visiting Almeria next month for a few days and would like to visit Cabo de Gata, and maybe a few sights in the area, particularly along the coast. Do I need a rental car, or can I get around just using public transportation, or taxis? Also, how are the beaches in Almeria itself, Playa la Termica and Playa Zapillo? Are they clean, and good for swimming? Are there bars and restaurants along the beach as well? Same questions for the beaches to the west, like Roquetas Del Mar.

Expect a very desert-like landscape, with beautiful unspoilt coast, it´s a natural protected area. I´d drive a rental car to maximize your visit. Beaches and water are very clean, but not sure about water temperature at this time of the year. Roquetas de Mar is quite touristy, as San José, so there will be bars and restaurants (as its March and low season, some may be closed).

Thanks, Mike. I believe I saw your comments several months ago regarding el Valle Baztan and Elizondo, which I'll also be visiting next month. I appreciate your knowledge of your country, as well as your willingness to share it with us norteamericanos. If you ever get out here to Nuevo Mexico, I'd be willing to share my knowledge and love of la Tierra Encantada with you. Quite a few of the early settlers were from the Basque Country. Much of what I've seen, on TV, of Cabo de Gata reminds me of this area, and Baja California. Can't wait!

Thank you!!! You´re going to love Navarre and the Basque Country, quite the opposite to what you´ll be seeing in Almería...in fact, nothing in common! Eskerrik asko, again.

Mikel.
