Overnight in Cadiz or Jerez or somewhere in between...

Hello, we are traveling from Tarifa to Seville and have one night to spare on October 4th. We would like to see Cadiz and Jerez on the way. Where would you suggest we stay the night? It's Sherry season, so I'm thinking Jerez, but I heard Cadiz is worth seeing as well. I also read about the possibility of staying in El Puerto Santa Maria. We won't have a car, we will be traveling by train or bus.

Is it true that the crime rate in Jerez is high? Is there one city worth seeing than the other if we decide to just see one city?

Thanks for your suggestion in advance.

I was last in those towns in 2011. If I had to choose, I'd select Jerez because I feel it has more to offer. Cadiz has a beach and a cathedral. Because it is on a narrow peninsula, it is fairly small and doesn't take but a few hours to see. Jerez has a number of bodegas one can visit (e.g., Osborne and William & Humbert [Dry Sack sherry]), a castle/alcazar, and a world class equestrian center. Last time I was in Puerto de Santa Maria, it was a dump. It was hit hard by Spain's economy at that time. There were a lot of unemployed people just hanging out and a lot of trash in the streets. Other than the small cathedral and a castle that is seldom open, there's nothing to see in the town unless you're going to a bull fight. I have no idea about Jerez's crime rate but I didn't experience anything negative there.
