Opinions… Where 2 stay, Morning flight from MAD?

Returning home out of Madrid (11:30). Initially, I was just planning on an Airport hotel in Barajas and a boring evening before the flight, BUT….

Thoughts on that vs _______?

We always stay in town by the Puerta Del Sol and take the metro to the airport. It takes about 40 minutes. Others take the cercanias train from Atocha station, while others take a taxi.

We are taking late morning flight home as well. Why make your last night boring? We plan to arrive mid-afternoon and walk around more (we will have been there a couple of weeks earlier). And then plan to have an amazing dinner. We have done this type of plan often on our last night. Sleep on the plane home :).

This is our plan for our 12 noon departure from Madrid in early April. We are booked at the Petit Palace Posada del Paine - 3 minute walk to Sol metro station.

Not the airport Hilton……. Very bad experience there on my last trip. Loud, impersonal, and you had better be very close to your travel companion with the see through bathrooms.

I usually stay at a hotel in Barajas, but spend the last afternoon/evening in downtown Madrid and then take the train back to the airport when I'm ready for bed (or earlier if you're not up for wandering around that long). That way I'm not bored in a basic hotel near the airport but I also have the convenience of getting to MAD without the hassle of a longer train ride.

I stayed at the Hotel Europa in Puerta del Sol and took the Metro out to the airport. The Metro opens at 6 am so you should have time. Should take about 45 minutes or so.

Another vote for staying in town. Exactly what part of town I'd recommend might depend on where you're coming from and which terminal you're flying out of.

Hi from Wisconsin,
I sleep best at the airport. No worries about subway strikes or breakdowns. I leisurely breakfast, shower, pack, and walk to my flight.

You don't have to go to the airport early the night before. Leave your luggage at the last place you stayed until it is night time, then head out.

We are coming via rental car from somewhere near Caceres (that part of our itinerary is open. we may just wing it)

We could get to Madrid the afternoon before and drop off our car. Then, either take the train back and forth from a Barajas hotel to an evening dinner/paseo -OR- stay near a major station in Madrid where I also could drop off (sixt)

The airport isn’t that far from the city, and your flights isn’t all that early.

Id drop the car in the city and do to the airport in the AM. Taxi around 30€ in the opposite direction of traffic. Transit to airport: Flying Iberia or American stay near, but northwest of Atocha for a no-change train to T4. Any other transatlantic carriers will leave from T1/2/3, stay near Plaza de España for a one-change subway.

To close the loop, we stayed at the perfectly nice Hotel Clement Barajas. I’d recommend it and the workaday neighborhood around it. We went into Madrid and enjoyed a nice day wandering
