Hi everyone! My husband and I are planning a trip to Spain for April 2026, at which point our daughter will be 14 months old. We’ll be there for two weeks and are planning to visit Madrid (2 nights), Granada (3), Seville (3), and Barcelona (4). We hope to see the main sights, eat some good food, and take the days slowly to enjoy our time.
I’d appreciate any advice!
Particularly, I have questions about stroller usage in the city, navigating timed entry tickets with kids, success getting an infant ticket for the train (Renfe or other), and local restaurant etiquette/expectations with kids.
Thank you!
You´ll find a very welcoming country to kids of all ages. Local restaurants will accommodate your kids and will provide a child high seat so she can also sit at the table with you, if you consider it so. Do not be surprised to see families with kids quite late at night (on weekends). Attractions will also be child-friendly.
We went to Madrid and Granada with our 2 year old last year, and will go to Barcelona in October (my daughter will be 3). We had such a great time in Spain! As another poster mentioned, Spain is great with kids, and is very child friendly.
I love your mention of slowly enjoying the days. That's our philosophy too, as you can't push things with kids! We usually picked one activity for the AM and one in the PM, with a nap time in between (for us too!). My daughter stopped napping recently, so our Barcelona trip will be rough on us! In each city we used Google Maps to identify playgrounds (parc infantil), which are all over and provide a nice break in between site seeing.
Be aware that days in Spain are structured differently, with later lunches and dinners, and therefore later bedtimes. We ended up basically pushing our whole days back 2 hours (wake up at 10AM, a luxury, instead of 8, lunch at 2 instead of 12, dinner at 9 instead of 7) and that seemed to be a good schedule for us. You'll figure out what works!
Stroller use was fine in Madrid, but not possible in Granada. We stayed in the Albaicin and there were just too many stairs & big cobble stones. We had a hip carrier instead (tushababy mini) and it worked great. That said, Granada was our absolute favorite, and was such a wonderful city. We stayed at an inn with a balcony and our daughter loved looking out at the street and the people walking by.
The Alhambra's website said strollers were not allowed and that they had carriers you could borrow, but we definitely saw some strollers inside. Not sure if they changed the rule, but just FYI. We booked our tickets ahead of time but needed to go to the ticket office to get a free child ticket. This was straightforward, but just something to keep in mind.
Many attractions mention if they allow strollers (Sagrada Familia does, for example). Many attractions let you book a free child's ticket when you book your own as well.
Good luck with trip planning! Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with.
Whilst not disagreeing with the previous posters, I don’t think your itinerary can be classed taking "days slowly". Remember you need to travel between all those places and each trip will be several hours.
Sevilla is mostly very flat and fine to use a pushchair, although in parts the steeets are narrow and cobbled. Most restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. expect children and won't be surprised by you bringing your child.
