My family is planning a trip to Spain and Italy in October. As part of the trip, we plan to fly from Madrid to Venice. The airline choices are Iberia and Air Europa. Iberia is about $300 more than Air Europa and it seems that you still have a fee to select seats but the reviews appear to be worse for Air Europa. Any recommendations?

I flew Air Europa to Milan this summer. They are a discount airline which I did not realize. They were not significantly cheaper when I booked them but they had the best routing from Miami.
I flew from Madrid to Milan which would be similar to what you are proposing. There were no issues at all but do not expect a drink or snack unless you upgrade. There was some version of business class which obviously had more amenities.
I certainly would not avoid them if you can save $300.
