One way auto rental - Valencia to Barcelona

We are trying to travel one way from Valencia to Barcelona in early July. We want to stop and spend one night in Saint Jaune d'Enveja. Every time we try to figure out what a rental car would cost there are various fees and surcharges that are different for every car rental website. Has anyone actually rented a car for one way travel and can explain what fees are really involved and about how much they would cost?

For instance we got this from https://www.autoeurope.ca/car.cfm
One Way Car Rental Information
For this rental the estimated one way fee is EUR 800.00, which will be paid locally (not included in rental rate below). VAT is not included.

But this from the same company a few minutes later https://www.autoeurope.ca/car.cfm

One Way Car Rental Information
For this rental the estimated one way fee is EUR 55.00, which will be paid locally (not included in rental rate below). VAT is included.

Seems to be a big difference. Very confused and frustrated. Appreciate any advice.

Car rentals can be all over the map. The problem with autoeurope is that they don't necessarily include fees. Try booking directly with one of the rental companies they are selling. Also try gemut.com. The only issue with them is that you have to wait for an email quote, you don't get it on their site. BUT they are based in the U.S. and have an 800 number you can call. Try that.

One of the problems is that the rental companies often include the one-way fee in the base quote, so you can't tell what the amount is. One way to try to figure it out is to compare the price for the same car/dates for drop-off in Valencia and in Barcelona. Then compare the autoeurope quotes with the Hertz/Europcar/whatever quotes. Sometimes there are fees for pick-up and/or drop-off at railway stations or airports, or after-hours.

As you saw, you have to get a few steps into the selection process on AutoEurope to see any one-way rental fees. But once you see a price like $800 within one country, do back away from it. For European rentals I've only heard of prices that high for dropping in other countries. Perhaps the first time you accidentally chose the auto-fill on-screen option for Valenciennes, France.

yes you are correct in that I had picked a train station in France and not in Valencia. A good learning curve
