I am traveling to Madrid at the end of May, 2017. I would like to know how to get to Granada from Madrid for a day sightseeing trip . Options I am looking at are , car rental, bus, trains and daily tour to Granada

Too far for a day trip. Car would be the quickest but five hours min one way and that doesn't include stops, lunch, parking, etc. Save it for another trip.

ViaMichelin (generally thought to be optimistic about travel times) estimates that it's a 4-1/2 hour one-way drive without stops, so it's impractical as a day-trip. The Alhambra is not a sight to be seen in an hour. Note, too, that Alhambra tickets do sell out.

It might not be practical, but people do what they must. Check out Veuling airfares and schedules as an alternative.

I would recommend a cost-benefit analysis for this idea, as well as some consideration of alternatives in Madrid.
