One-day car rental in Málaga

We'd like to rent a car for just one day in Málaga. Looking for advice about which company and also the most scenic and interesting route along the coast for a day trip. Will we have to pick up the car at the airport, or is there a city pickup place, too? We're staying in central Málaga for several weeks; we're going to Córdoba and Granada by train, and we did a one-day tour with a guide in Ronda. We'd like to take a leisurely day driving along the coast to explore some nearby places. Thanks for your suggestions!

I'm assuming that you're flying into the airport in which case renting at the airport makes the most sense, you'll have the widest range of cars and automatics if you need one. I typically use the main companies, Avis/Budget, Hertz and Sixt as I've never had any issues, the cars have all been new and well maintained and I've never experienced any of the dubious practices such as false damage accusations etc. There are a lot of companies that offer very attractive rates but if it looks too good to be true.....

I haven't got any advice for coastal drives as I usually just take the A7 from Malaga airport straight to Estepona. Most of the coastal towns are built up touristy areas catering for Europeans looking for cheap sun, sea and sand holidays and therefore aren't particularly traditional or attractive. I much prefer driving inland and visiting the towns and villages in the hills and mountains.

We are already in Málaga, staying in the old city. We only need the car for one day. We CAN go to the airport to get it, but it would be more convenient to pick it up in town somewhere.

I’d head east from Málaga towards Almería since few tourists head that direction. By Nerja is an impressive 19th century aqueduct, Aqueduct Eagle, with 4 levels of arches. An older aqueduct is further east, Parque del Acueducto prior to Salobreña. Salobreña has a nice beach. Then, prior to Almeria is Acueducto de los Veinte Ojos in La Gangosa. Almería has a nice market and an impressive Alcazaba. Finally, northeast of Almería is the Tabernas Desert, Europe’s only natural desert,

If you go west from Málaga you’ll be driving along the Costa Del Sol with hoards of tourists and ex-pats.

Thank you for these excellent suggestions! Driving east from Málaga sounds like a good plan.
