"Olentzero" arrives tomorrow to the Basque Country

For those of you that may be visiting the Basque Country or Navarre these Christmas, you´ll see everywhere images of our "Olentzero", the bearded coal-maker that descends from the mountains to bring our presents tomorrow night. This character may not be allowed in some countries, as he smokes in a pipe and drinks cider, but I guess it´s the way it is. His name is thought to come from "onen zaro", the "bearer of good news" in Basque (well, one of the theories about his name), and it´s been recently that he´s found a wife (Maridomingi) and has a lot of helpers in the woods, the "galtzagorriak" or "red pants". No Santa in the Basque Country...but we also have the visit of the Three Magic Kings on Jan 6th, who come in camels loaded with presents and it's the main reason for our very long Christmas period, that finishes that day. If this part of Basque mythology is of your interest, it´s well explained here, https://nabasque.eus/olentzero.html

I don’t know that I will ever get there at this time of year, but I love hearing about the different ways of celebrating!

do you know about the automated Belen in Laguardia? It was built in 1749. They are four "perfomances" during the Christmas season:

December 25 for the birth of Jesus
January 1 for the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
January 6 for the Epiphany
and the last one, which was the close the Christmas season is
February 6 The Flight to Egypt.

It is a strange mix of religious history, local shephards, and txistus and tamborils

5 de diciembre: el nacimiento de Jesús y la adoración de los pastores (13:15)
1 de enero: la presentación en el templo (13:15)
6 de enero: la adoración a los Reyes Magos (13:15)
6 de febrero: la huida a Egipto (
