Off-the-beaten-path beach town...

We are visiting 3 large cities and would like to add one more stop. I would like to add a 2 night stay...smaller town, safe, good beaches, good food...off the beaten path. Does anyone have any suggestions?!

If a beach is not a crucial criterion, I could list several towns, for I've focused my Spain trips precisely on such places; but if beaches are essential, I'll have to pass.

What three large cities do you now have in mind? Is it Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona? If so, then maybe somewhere on the Costa Brava near Barcelona, such as Tossa de Mar?
But you could also fulfil all of your beachy needs in Valencia. It is quite laid-back.

Without any idea as to which cities you’re visiting or whether the beach is a beach with a view or for swimming, it’s a difficult question to answer since Spain is pretty large. I’ll throw out Zumaia along the north coast, cathedral beach near Ribadeo (also also the north coast), Mojácar east of Almería on the southern coast, or Rota on the bay of Cadiz.

I don't go to Europe for beaches, I go to the coastal US or the Carribean. But, today's New York Times has a detailed article on five beach towns in Europe. The link below has a pay wall, but you can probably read the whole article at your public library:

The five beach towns are:

Playa de Frejulfe
Asturias, Spain

Cap Ferret and Arcachon
France

Ålbæk Strand and Råbjerg Mile
Denmark

Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina
Portugal

Ses Illetes
Formentera, Spain
