off the beaten path food in Barcelona

Hello, have been trying to find a place or two to eat in Barcelona off the beaten path. I will be visiting the city in mid January for several days and would like to find small casual (everyday and not upscale) restaurants serving mostly locals. I have been told La Bombeta in Barceloneta is one such place, Quimet d’Horta in Horta another. What are places like this in Poblenou or Pedrables? Would greatly appreciate any suggestion. Thanks and best wishes, e.

My wife and I were in Barcelona for three nights this past May and enjoyed Elsa y Fred near our apartment.

Thanks, Jim! I have also heard that Txirimiri near Catedral de Barcelona is also a claim-no-fame place loved by the locals.

Yep Emily, TimeOut is sort of a non-official bible for going out here in Barcelona. We use it a lot. Note that not all its content is available in English or Spanish though... so you might want to browse the Catalan version and use Google Translate, so you ensure you don't miss anything :))

A guidebook can't, by definition, direct you to a place without other tourists, but Rick's books do share places that locals have recommended to him.

I highly recommend Teresa Carles - a most mavelous vegetarian restaurant of beautiful, fresh, creative food. I was in Barcelona 10 days and ate here 5 times. It's on a walking street (carrer de jovellanos). Map on Yelp. We went soon at late lunch or early dinner and missed the lines. Open 9 am - 11:30 pm.

For info Dorothy, TC has just opened another place not far from the restaurant, Teresa's Juicery (http://www.teresacarles.com/tj/) where you can grab a bite to eat and have one of their delicious natural juices, or have it to go too. Worth visiting.

We had great food in Barcelona, but two restaurants really stood out, each for a different reason. We loved 7 Portes in the Gothic District. Traditional food, moderate prices, excellent service. I got the feeling it's very touristy, though; but I'd go back in a minute: http://www.7portes.com/angles/

The second place was Botafumeiro near Exaimple (maybe it's Gracia but still nearby). One of the finest restaurants that I've ever eaten in, with a price to match. Great seafood. I had sea cucumber. Delicious. Here's the link: http://www.botafumeiro.es/en/home

I don't know if these are "off the beaten path" enough, but I recommend them both.

My favorite was this:

El Xampanyet
Carrer de Montcada, 22
08003 Barcelona
Spain

It was the only place that seemed local and authentic. The other places we tried were either upscale bars with tapas or chain tapas restaurants with multiple locations.
