northern Spain vs Portugal where spend more time ?

Hi !

We (2 adluts and 2 kids 5 ans 9) will arrive in Barcelona july 13 and fly back home (Montreal) from Lisbon august 6 so we have 24 nights. we plan to stay 4-5 nights in barcelona, 2-3 Porto and 3-4 in Lisbon. That plan leaves us with 12-15 nights for the rest of our trip.

  • We still try to figure train or car. If we get a car we would have to drop it in Spain before getting one in portugal
  • We love to spend at least 2 nights at the same place
  • We love small villages from which we could do daytrip (if we have a car !)
  • We're not very beach inclined, but can spend a day or 2 there.

Thanks !

I would head north to avoid the severe summer heat of Jul/Aug in Andalusia.
Use a mix of car and train.

July 13 Arrive Barcelona (5)
July 18 Train to Madrid (4)
July 22 Train to Salamanca (2)
Pick up hire car in Salamanca
July 24 Drive to Leon (1)
July 25 Drive to Oviedo (2)
July 27 Drive to Santiago de Compostela (3)
Return hire car in Vigo
July 30 Train to Porto (3)
Aug 2 Train to Lisbon (4)
Aug 6 Depart Lisbon

Thnaks for that itinerary suggestion !

Madrid is not for us, it will be really too hot. We could manage some heat, but the one in madrid is really too much for us and our kids ! We want to stay on the coast (or not too far from it !)

David's itinerary in the previous post is excellent advice, but you could exactly duplicate it by public transportation without the hassle of renting a car and having to deal with traffic and parking issues in cities like Leon and Santiago.

We dont have a definitive route but we want to see Zaragozza, and maybe Lugo. We alo want to skip San Sebastian (that place is very very expensive, and with kids we wont enjoy fully the Pintxo scene). For now the idea could be to take the autoroute from Saragossa to Bilbao, stay on the coast from Bilbao to Gijon, from Gijon go to Leon, then go to Lugo (see Ponferrada in route) and then go to Santigo de compostella. From there go To Vigo and drop the car. What we have to figure is where to sleep in that road, where to stop, and which places deserve more of our time.

We know that this is not ideal and that we could stay 3 weeks without getting bored in that region, but our 2 goals for that trip where Barcelone and Portugal, everything between is a bonus

Mathemilu, I'm confused. Are you traveling with bucephale? If you are not, you should start your own thread, because it's very confusing when people start giving responses for two different itineraries.

In northern Spain, in addition to the cities already mentioned, I liked Burgos and A Coruna. The latter has a sunnier-than-usual microclimate, however, and I cannot promise that it will be cool like most of Galicia in July. There are scattered picturesque former fishing villages (now mostly touristy) all along Spain's northern coast. When you pin down the cities you plan to visit we can probably suggest some nearby options. I visited five small towns/villages in the Basque Country alone, and they were all worth a stop: Hondarribia, Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia and Bermeo.

The Picos de Europa area would be a good possibility in the summer, too. It's mountainous and cooler than places farther south. Possibly warmer than the coast when you're not at altitude, though. Just driving through that region is beautiful. I especially I liked the historic stone town of Potes.

I enjoyed an afternoon wandering around Gijon, which has a small medieval district and some interesting early 20th century architecture. It's a large industrial city, though, and I don't know how easily you'll get around with a car. One thing to check on if you're trying to avoid unnecessarily costly hotels is the timing of the annual large literary festival held in Gijon, Semana Negra. It's not a terribly touristy city, so I'm assuming things get very tight during Semana Negra.

Zaragoza bakes in the summer. Nearly as hot will be the smaller town of Teruel, which has distinctive architecture with both mudejar towers and quite a bit of modernista stuff. Teruel is time-consuming to reach, but it's not so bad if you'll already be in Zaragoza, and I found it extremely atmospheric and with comparatively few non-Spanish tourists.

acraven: thanks for that answer ! Sorry about the confusion. mathemilu and Bucephale are the same person (me !). Ove created two accounts in the past (cant remember why) and i've logged onto the wrong one ! I've checked aboute the semana negrada in Gijon, it's gonna be fine since it,s the week before i could be there. There's so much options to chose ? I guess I will have to read to make thes choices thats best suits oour interest. The only thing we are almost certain is to get a car ant to spend 6 nights between Barcelona and Porto.

Wonderful: thanks too for that answer. You said to avoid Vigo. we dont want to sleep or do tourism there but only drop our car and take the train 9or bus) to Porto. If there,s another place that allows us to do that we would, but it seems to be the better and shorter option.

I agree that Vigo is nothing special from the tourist standpoint, but I liked A Coruna! Different tastes...
