Northern Spain Babymoon Help

My husband and I will be traveling for our babymoon to San Sebastian July 29-August 1 and then have 2 nights to play with before heading to Madrid for 3 nights. We are frequent travelers and have both been to Spain (but not yet Madrid or northern Spain, other than Barcelona) a few times before. We know it will be hot, but unfortunately, this was the only time we could make it work, so we plan on taking full advantage of siesta during the hottest hours of the day.

We will be renting a car and are hoping to find a charming, smaller/less touristy city to stay in and don't mind going a bit out of our way. We would love somewhere very walkable with good tapas/pintxos options, and an old town area (perhaps similar to what you'd find in Seville or Valencia). I have done some initial research and the following places all look great, but would love to know where folks suggest we go. Are there any other (semi)hidden gems we should check out instead?

-Zaragoza
-Vitoria-Gasteiz
-Burgos
-Logrono
-Pamplona
-Segovia

Thank you!

hey megan
you could look at saint jean de luz in the french basque region. since you have a car check out itxassou home of the black cherries, espelette home of the red peppers then to saint jean pied de port, check out rhunetrain.com runs up the mountain, hoteleskualduna/chezkatina is family run hotel/restaurant. these are small little cute villages in the farm land/countrysides, small private wineries in the area if interested, the ocean/beaches known for great surfing at biarritz, bayonne (famous for ham and chocolate). my BFF and family are from near saint jean pied de port, heard so much and she loves it, small and quiet. get a gps or download on phone and enjoy a different kinda adventure.

-Zaragoza - a little out of the way.
-Pamplona - not of much interest.
-Logrono - La Rioja would be my choice if driving. Also look at LaGuardia.
-Vitoria-Gasteiz
-Burgos
-Valladolid
-Segovia
... these four are all stops on direct high speed train service. I would take the train and stay a night in Vitoria-Gasteiz and a night in Valladolid.

Zaragoza has points of interest, with both a Moorish palace and an historic district, but can be brutally hot in mid-summer. If you choose it, do not stay out near the train/bus station, which has no decent food sources nearby. How walkable the city is would depend partly on the temperature. I was not lucky.

Vitoria-Gasteiz has a large historic district and is likely to be much milder, temperature-wise; It was cool and rainy the one day I was there. I liked the city, but I don't know that it has the liveliness you're looking for--but then again I was there on a very rainy day.

Burgos is very pretty (with a river right downtown) and has two interesting convents on the outskirts. It's known for being windy, but my weather wasn't terribly hot. It's on the pilgrimage route, so the historic area is a buzzing place, so much so that you might want to avoid hotels in the most central area if you have a problem with noise. It seemed to be quite a young crowd.

Logrono I have no expetience with, but the charming little hill town of Laguardia is not far away. Vitoria-Gasteiz is close as well. Not sure how the weather compares.

Pamplona has a small historic area, but for me the city wasn't as appealing as many others I visited in Spain. It was pretty touristy when I was there, given that it's just not that special except during the running of the bulls. It tends to be hotter than the Basque Country but not as hot as Zaragoza.

Segovia I liked a lot. It has some distictive architecture. I'd expect it to be hot but not as bad as Zaragoza.

I'd choose Burgos or Vitoria-Gasteiz, partly because of weather concerns. I can't guarantee what sort of tapas experience you'll have in any of those places since I didn't do much nibbling.

Thanks so much to everyone that has responded - this is all very helpful! Based on what I'm hearing, we will nix Pamplona and Zaragoza from the list.

@joe, I appreciate you clarifying our situation. :)

@princess pupule - we've heard about how great Saint Jean-de-luz is and actually plan to take a day trip there from San Sebastian, so we will definitely make some of the other stops you suggested!

@djp_syd - I haven't heard of Valladolid, so excited to check that out! If we do Rioja, would you suggest staying in Logrono or Laguardia?

@acraven - I so appreciate your helpful details and consideration of the hot weather we know we'll be facing. I am definitely going to look more into both Burgos and Vitoria Gasteiz!

Megan, I agree with Princess Pupule, and you would probably be better off staying in the Basque country area.
San Juan de Luz is on the coast so it will probably be busy at the time. A bit inland is the Baztan valley, with Elizondo as a base. Also close by, on the French side is San Juan Pie de Puerto. It is a nice small town and the area will be nice to visit.

I would usually agree with Acraven about Pamplona, but the time you are going to be there it is worth a visit. San Fermines are over, and the town is going through the San Fermin hangover. One special bonus is that the blue zone parking is free from the end of SFs to Aug. 1.

I know a little about Logroño and pregnant women in July, and I would suggest you save it for another time. One it is hot and two you won't be able to enjoy the wine. Zaragoza and Burgos are also going to be hot. Vitoria is also a good option.
