We will be in Granada mid July and were hoping to take train to Barcelona. Has anyone done this trip? How to book it?
Don't think there is one on that route. With new high speed trains and discount airlines, the night trains are fading away. You can check for schedules at dbahn.com and book it on the national railline for Spain.
You'll need to check the RENFE website to see if it is still offered. There has been rail construction into and out of Granada for some time and the overnight train may have been stopped.
But I also strongly recommend just flying between these two cities. It's a short flight and the Granada airport is small and easy. You can usually get pretty cheap fares within Spain. Just be very aware of airfare restrictions for luggage; they are strictly enforced.
Renfe site still shows the Trenhotel between Granada and Barcelona, but when I attempt a dummy booking to check for sure it keeps giving an error message.

Pk,
The Trenhotel from Granada to Barcelona has been temporarily suspended, since the railway renovations around Granada began (April 2015)
If you want to take the train from Granada to Barcelona, you will travel via bus + AVE combination;
you will basically travel via bus to Antequera Santa Ana Station, where you will transfer to an AVE train for the rest of the trip to Barcelona.
There are presently limited trains traveling this route...
According to http://www.renfe.com, there are only 2 trains/day (06:45 & 12:45)
Travel time is over 7.5 hours, so you may want to consider flying, as Douglas has suggested above.
Once the railway renovations are completed, there will be an AVE train traveling directly from Granada to Barcelona,
but no one knows when this will happen.
Having taken the night train we offer a strong recommendation to fly.
We have decided to fly. Thanks everyone for your help.
Pk,
Good idea!
