new years: Barcelona or Madrid?????

Hello,

My best friend and I have decided we want to be in Spain for new years this year. It's been a rough year for both of us. We are both two fun loving women, just wanting to let loose and have good food/drinks, shopping, museums, people watching, maybe some good bar or lounge hopping, and yes, hopefully some smooching with a cute guy or two. Would love a good place to be out celebrating the new year. Neither of us have been to Spain. Barcelona and Madrid sound both up our alley and we can't decide! Help!

From an activity standpoint I'm sure you'd have a great time in either place. (I'm 66 years old and am not going to try to get more specific than that!) Around New Year's the odds are that the weather will be noticeably milder in Barcelona. Wikipedia shows the average high and average low will both be roughly 9 - 10 degrees warmer (F) in Barcelona, which is enough to make quite a difference.

I love the modernista architecture in Barcelona and find it a generally more interesting city, but Madrid has three important art museums, so you really can't go wrong. Spaniards and Catalans are night owls. Dinner is likely to be consumed after 10 PM, so you'll find the streets really busy way into the night.
