My husband and I ( we are in our 40’s)
will be arriving in Barcelona about noon on New Year’s Eve. Any suggestion on what to do to celebrate New Year’s Eve?

This year, though, can be a little lacklustre because of the political situation. Our legitimate government here in Catalonia has been "hijacked" -so to speak- and if the election forced upon us for next Dec 21st repeats the previous results (as it is expected), we'll be in another tense stand-off with the Spanish, so there might not be much "mood" to celebrate NYE. In any case, follow this page of the City Hall for the latest details on the celebration: http://lameva.barcelona.cat/en/christmas/new-years-bell-ringing
PS: it's free to attend, but in a normal year it gathers +70000 so don't get there too late or else you won't "get in". There's a maximum capacity and when reached, Police prevent more people to enter the area, for safety reasons.
hi Jeff and Kim, there will be plenty of restaurants all around the city with special events to celebrate NYE. it is better to book in advance cause they will be pretty full. People tend to celebrate Christmas home with their family and go out for the NYE.
There is normally a gathering in Montjuic with music, installations and some presentations starting at 21 30 (https://www.timeout.es/barcelona/es/que-hacer/campanadas-de-fin-de-anyo). People come with 12 grapes and eat on with each bell ring.
