New Year's Day in Southern Spain or Madrid

Give it to me straight ... is there any way to enjoyably spend our time on New Year's Day? We are not hikers, also don't want to be roaming around all day if everywhere with a bathroom is closed. Most likely we will be in Madrid that day, and also it seems like if there is anything to do anywhere, it would be there. Last NYD, we were in London and went to Kew Gardens, which was open. I am open to anything ... a museum, a walking tour, just anything other than staring at hotel walls all day long. I understand it won't be action packed; just don't want the day to be a total loss. I am trying to figure out where I will be when for this trip, so if there is a better place to be in Southern Spain (Seville, Granada, Ronda, Cordoba, etc.), I am open to it. Thank you!

Well, it´s a very lively day in Spain, as lots of people enjoy their "aperitivo", that is, socializing before lunch time (around 12 30 to 0230pm or 3pm) having a glass of wine and some bar food, mostly outside the bars and filling up the streets. A great time to socialize and enjoy this very lively atmosphere, until lunch time...then, by 3pm, everything dies down and people go for lunch.
