Neighborhoods and Transit

My girlfriend decided to join me on my trip to Barcelona/Madrid. Really changed my plans. I've booked a nice, reasonably priced hotel in Madrid so I'm all set there.

We have very different travel styles. I like to use buses and metros, don't mind walking far, and will stay at lower end places. She doesn't like to make transfers very much between metros and buses. She doesn't like to walk too much but would like to see the main attractions. She also likes nicer hotels. I am looking for an area that is close to those attractions, yet accessible by metro or bus. I'd prefer a nice Airbnb or a nice hotel, for $100.00 a night ( I haven't seen too many). Any help would be appreciated.

I suspect many who read your post may have a "suggestion" which does not involve where to stay.
Regarding your request..... Try the Latina district.

dg,

Given the significant difference in your travel styles, that scenario sounds like a "recipe for disaster". Has your girlfriend used public transit in Europe? If "she doesn't like to walk too much" then Taxi's are about the only option. Hopefully she won't mind covering the cost for those.

Regarding accommodations, you might get some good ideas by checking the Spain guidebook as there are reliable accommodations listed there in various price ranges. You should be able to find a good mid-range place that will be a reasonable compromise for both of you.

Good luck!

Whoa !!! I would suggest a new girl friend. Sounds high maintenance. I will bet she is not in to packing light either. Walking is a way of life in Europe. If not compatible here assume there would be other areas of similar differences. Good luck.

If you want her to see the major sites without walking much, put her on the hop-on, hop-off bus. Then you will have about 90 minutes to go do something YOU want to do.

There is walking, walking, walking any where you go in these two cities if you are to see anything. Of course you can take the metro or bus between major destinations, but there will be still a need for good walking shoes...

Frankly,I think you would enjoy the trip much more if you were a solo traveler such as myself....;.

I'm staying in Barcelona right now at an Airbnb apartment which works great for me (your girlfriend probably wouldn't like it much), but as for advice, I'd try looking in El Born (especially the southern/eastern half which is more trendy), anywhere in the Barri Gotic, or in the Eixample, which is the part of town that everyone recommends. I'm staying in El Born, which I prefer because it has more of that "old city" feel with lots of little bars and restaurants and interesting local shops. The Eixample is more upscale chain stores and fancier restaurants (especially near Passeig de Gracia), and the neighborhood is a basic square grid pattern (which to me is a bit boring). The metro system is spaced pretty equally apart so any of those neighborhoods you stay in will be the same distance walking to transportation. There may be more bus options in the Eixample because of the easier access with wider streets. If you have any specific hotel ideas, I'd be happy to chime in, since I've walked the Born and Barri Gotic neighborhoods every night for two weeks now and am pretty versed in the various areas. I'm sure any locals on here can offer great help as well.

Thanks Rick, can you tell me how far away are the Metros, and any recommendations for hotels or bnb's. Where are you staying, I'd like to see it. My gf only needs a clean place with a private bathroom. She's starting to see the light.

DG, since I'm staying in an Airbnb apartment, I can't recommend any specific hotels since I've never stayed in them. I can only recommend areas of town. The metro is usually no more than 5-minute walk, and possibly even closer depending on where you stay. If you look in the Barri Gotic and El Born for hotels/bnb's I can offer advice about specific places that you find in your price range. I also don't know your travel dates, so I can't do any searching on my own.
