need transportation help from Portugal to Nerja, Spain

we will be ending a walk in Odeceixe, Portugal. Need to get to Nerja, Spain.
yes, I see many buses, but we will be traveling on Sep 28th.- there are fewer buses running, and it makes for an incredibly long, complicated trip. Is there an easier way to get to Nerja? Would it be preferable to spend the night on the way to break up this trip?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm not familiar with the Portuguese town where you'll be. However, I think you're discovering what a friend and I found out, many years ago, about getting from Portugal to southern Spain. It's so close and looks like it should be so easy; but it's not. Buses are the best bet. We broke up the ride between Lisbon and Seville by staying one night in Tavira. The alternatives involve gong all the way to Madrid and back south, again.

This is a long trip, no matter how you do it, but your best option would be to fly from Lisbon to Malaga. TAP has 3 flights on 9/28 for $78 (see www.skyscanner.com). One flight departs Lisbon at 4:25 p.m. arriving in Malaga at 6:50. Buses run hourly from the main Malaga bus station to Nerja until about 9:30 p.m.

By bus, it's will be a long trip involving at least 4 buses. Your best option would be to take a bus from Odeceixe to Lagos (80 min.), then take the direct bus to Sevilla and spend the night there (5.5 hours, 2 buses daily). The next day you can take a bus to Malaga (about 3 hours, 4-6 buses per day), and on to Nerja (1 -1.5 hours, buses nearly hourly).

I've taken the bus from Lagos to Arcos, which was a LONG day, involving a change in Sevilla. If you are coming from further up the coast and going to Nerja, this will be even longer. Rich's tip on flying from Lisbon sounds like your best option.
